On the afternoon of 25th August 1993 a tragic murder was committed at a point of upheaval in the violent history of political change in South Africa. The young American Fulbright Scholar, Amy Biehl, was here to serve democracy and assist in preparing voters for the coming democratic election and the furtherance of women’s rights. She had given a lift to three university colleagues to their homes in Guguglethu and entered the township at a moment in which gathering groups had swelled into a dangerous protest march. She was isolated, stoned, hunted down and stabbed to death, while the crowd screamed for her blood and the country was in the painful throes of violent political transition. The tragedy occurred just eight months short of South Africa’s first democratic election in which Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was elected first democratic President of South Africa, and just three days before the Fulbright Scholar’s return home to America. Such was the timing and the mood in the country that it had the potential to plunge the country into crisis and a bloodbath, a fate narrowly and quickly and expediently averted. The incident ricocheted around the world and was headline news on all international media. The parents of the slain girl were lionised in their magnanimous gesture of petitioning for the killers’ release at the Truth and Reconciliation Hearing in the immediate post-apartheid South Africa. But what was the mothers’ story?

La jeune boursière américaine Fulbright, Amy Biehl, était là pour servir la démocratie et aider à préparer les électeurs aux prochaines élections démocratiques et à la promotion des droits des femmes. Elle avait conduit trois collègues universitaires à leur domicile à Guguglethu et était entrée dans le canton à un moment où les groupes de rassemblement s’étaient transformés en une dangereuse marche de protestation. Elle a été isolée, lapidée, traquée et poignardée à mort, tandis que la foule criait pour son sang et que le pays était en proie à une transition politique violente. La tragédie s’est produite à peine huit mois avant les premières élections démocratiques d’Afrique du Sud au cours desquelles Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela a été élu premier président démocrate d’Afrique du Sud, et trois jours seulement avant le retour du boursier Fulbright en Amérique. Le moment et l’ambiance dans le pays étaient tels qu’il avait le potentiel de plonger le pays dans une crise et un bain de sang, un destin évité de justesse, rapidement et de manière opportune. L’incident a ricoché dans le monde entier et a fait la une de tous les médias internationaux. Les parents de la jeune fille tuée ont été honorés dans leur geste magnanime de pétition pour la libération des tueurs lors de l’audience vérité et réconciliation dans l’Afrique du Sud immédiatement après l’apartheid.
